Building a Greener, More Equitable Future LA County Urban Renewable Energy Summit

This past week, I had the incredible honor of attending the Inaugural LA County Urban Renewable Energy Summit a first of its-kind gathering bringing together over 200 trailblazers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and community advocates to discuss the future of climate resilience, energy equity, and sustainable urban innovation.

Held in the heart of Los Angeles, the summit served as a powerful platform to amplify solutions that are not only environmentally responsible but also socially inclusive, with a strong focus on equity for Black and Brown communities and underserved neighborhoods.

A Unified Vision for Resilience and Equity

At a time when climate change continues to disproportionately impact vulnerable populations, this summit was more than just a dialogue it was a declaration. A declaration that equity must be embedded in every clean energy strategy, and that community driven innovation is key to long term success. From multifamily housing developers to nonprofit leaders, local governments to green technology startups, the event created a space where diverse voices could converge and align on a shared mission: to build a cleaner, more resilient, and more just future for Los Angeles and beyond.

LA's Bold Push Toward a Greener Future

The summit underscored how Los Angeles is quickly becoming a national leader in green innovation and sustainability. Through major policy shifts and bold climate goals, LA is driving forward one of the most ambitious clean energy agendas in the country.

Key green initiatives underway in LA include

• LA100 (Los Angeles 100% Renewable Energy Initiative) A citywide commitment to transition Los Angeles to 100% renewable energy by 2035, focusing on solar, wind, and storage technologies.

  
  

• Green New Deal LA A comprehensive plan introduced by Mayor Karen Bass and the City Council to achieve zero carbon emissions, improve air quality, and invest in green infrastructure while creating thousands of green jobs.

  
  

• Cool Streets LA A heat mitigation program that includes planting trees, installing reflective pavement, and improving green space in underserved neighborhoods.

• Workforce Equity in Green Jobs Workforce development programs aimed at training and upskilling residents particularly from historically marginalized communities for jobs in clean energy, transportation, water conservation, and sustainability.

There was a growing emphasis on how small businesses, especially Black and Brown owned enterprises, can be part of the clean energy supply chain. From installing panels to retrofitting buildings, these ventures can benefit directly from LA’s sustainable transformation.

Gratitude and Momentum

A huge thank you to the City of Los Angeles for the invitation to attend this visionary event. The commitment shown by city officials and event organizers to build lasting climate solutions that reflect the needs and realities of urban communities was truly inspiring.

I left the summit energized by the collaborations forming, the ideas being shared, and the clear momentum driving this movement forward. This wasn’t just another climate event it was the beginning of a new chapter for inclusive, community-powered sustainability in Los Angeles County.
